Timeline for the 2020 Census

In mid-March, households will begin receiving official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census.

By April 1, 2020, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. You will have three options for responding:

  • Online
  • By phone
  • By mail

If you have questions or need assistance filling out your form, contact the Census Bureau at 301-763-INFO (4636) or 800-923-8282.

Census takers in your community

You may also see census workers in your neighborhood this year. This is a normal part of the process. Your information is such an important part of the 2020 Census, that if you haven't responded on your own, the Census Bureau sends census takers to help make sure you are counted.

Census takers will visit homes in April to conduct quality check interviews, and then in mid-May to help collect responses.

If someone visits your home to collect information for the 2020 Census, check to make sure that they have a valid ID badge, with their photograph, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date. Census workers may also carry Census Bureau bags and other equipment with the Census Bureau logo.
